One of the earliest mentions comes from the Roman author Pliny the Elder, who, in his work "Natural History" (77 - 79 AD), described "Ceylon, which produces the finest sapphires, is famed for its gems". This statement not only highlights the exceptional quality of Sri Lanka's gemstones, particularly sapphires, but also shows that the island's gemstones were well-known and highly valued in ancient times.
Marco Polo, the Venetian explorer, also mentioned the gemstones of Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in his Travels written in the 13th century. He described the island as a place where some of the world’s most valuable gems were found. Specifically, he wrote:
“Ceylon is an island which produces the finest quality of sapphires, topazes, and other precious stones in great quantity.”
